Reach for Love (Poem)

53

By Jennifer L Glass

When I met you, you were just a boy,
And I was just a girl, but that was just fine,
Before long I’d gotten you like a shiny new toy,
Baby, I was happy you were mine, all mine!

Your fingers curled around mine, a kiss in my palm,
With a devilish glint in our eyes, laughter on our lips,
We were taking on the world, our love a sweet balm,
So we stuck together, arm in arm, your hand on my hips.

Time went by, we weren't children any more,
Not young, not quite old, but still happy and sure,
Because we had each other, and knew why for,
‘Cause we were friends first, the rest I’ll demure.

We are certain, we are confident, we know each look,
We have our inside jokes, know each other’s quirks,
We stay together even when it’s hard, tossed the book,
Because we do it our way, whatever way works.

First comes marriage, then comes.. the look in your eyes,
The tears, the wonderment, the pride, the awe, the glee,
When you saw him the first time, your son, heard his cries,
I knew then that I’d have to share, it wasn't just about me.

That’s okay, we soon discovered there’s enough to go ‘round,
This love of ours we can share, and let it grow, let it teach,
Our children are loved, as are we, we've got it down,
We can all hold hands, be happy and love, we just got to reach.
